How Effective is Viagra?
Studies have shown that Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction and it has a high percentage of satisfied users. It can be taken up to four hours before sex but is only effective while you are aroused. It won’t cause an erection unless you are sexually stimulated. Up to 94% of men who have used Viagra have reported satisfaction with the treatment.
How quickly does it work?
Viagra normally takes about 60 minutes to work but it can vary. If you take Viagra with a heavy meal, you may find it takes longer to work.
How does Viagra work?
Viagra and sildenafil belong to a group of medicines called PDE-5 inhibitors. They work by increasing the blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused. This helps you to get and maintain an erection hard enough for sex. Viagra will not cause an unwanted erection and will have no effect unless you are sexually aroused.

Does the NHS Recommend Using Viagra?
The generic version of Viagra, called sildenafil, is available on the NHS to treat erectile dysfunction and some types of high blood pressure. Branded versions of sildenafil, including Viagra, are not available on the NHS, except in special circumstances. If you suffer with ED symptoms speak to your doctor. They will ask more questions and examine you to check for any underlying causes for your symptoms and may prescribe sildenafil for you.
The NHS recommends that sildenafil is taken exactly as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Sildenafil is available in different doses ranging from 25mg to 100mg. The usual dose is 50mg but depending on the effect this has, the dose can be increased to 100mg or lowered to 25mg.
The NHS recommends that sildenafil is taken up to 4 hours before you want to have sex. You should only take sildenafil once per day.

“I was finding it more and more difficult to get an erection and when I did get one it was not as hard as it was a few years ago. I also found that I could not maintain my erection as consequently sex was being rushed so much so my wife was left unsatisfied. My doctor prescribed 50 mg Viagra which helped but did not completely solve the problem. She then upped my prescription to 100mg and this had been amazing. After about 45 minutes of taking the Viagra, just the thought of sex gives me an erection whereas previously my wife had to give me a lot of stimulation to get me up. Also, my erection is a lot harder and is maintained as long as we want. It really is fantastic.”
“Very good, very easy service.
The sildenafil worked a treat!
Highly recommend to anyone.”
“I don't see any women commenting, maybe I'm the first? My husband is 13 years older than me and started having "unreliable" erections a few years ago (in his late 50s) This was causing me to feel insecure, thinking maybe he just wasn't turned on by me anymore. We did not discuss it, I was afraid it would cause anxiety and make matters worse. Viagra was recommended by a friend, so we tried it and that was the best erection my husband has ever had! (In 25 years!) I tell him it just helps him meet his best potential. So this has been a part of our lives ever since. The 45-minute wait is actually kind of a turn on because I know what's coming. I love it and I highly recommend it. Side effects: blurry vision and stuffy nose.”
“My husband is 16 years older than me and was diagnosed with diabetes and ED. Active 46 yr old at a healthy weight. 6' tall and about 180 lbs. He used to take OTC herbal supplements which worked with unreliable success but he finally talked to the dr and was given viagra samples. He takes 50 mg at a time. The viagra is much more reliable. He takes it right before foreplay and is rock hard right on cue 30 to 60 minutes later. Slight headaches sometimes but never enough to curb his appetite. Now his performance matches his desire and we both have multiple orgasms. It definitely works best on an empty stomach or eating low-fat foods.”
Some of these reviews mention the side effects of Viagra or sildenafil. As with all medicines, there is a risk of experiencing negative effects. Often these don’t last long and are not serious. If you experience any unwanted side effects when using Viagra and are concerned, you should speak to your doctor.
How Does Viagra Compare to Other Treatments?
Viagra is not the only treatment available for erectile dysfunction. Alternatives are available such as:
Cialis is a long-lasting erectile dysfunction treatment. It works in a similar way to Viagra because it helps to relax the muscles around the penis, increasing blood flow, which makes it easier to get and maintain an erection. Cialis can last for up to 36 hours, so it is useful if you do not want to plan sex in advance. It is up to 86% effective at treating erectile dysfunction.
Levitra contains the active ingredient vardenafil. Levitra also belongs to the group of medicines called PDE-5 inhibitors, so works in the same way as Viagra. It is effective for up to 83% of users. It can take up to an hour to work and may last for up to 4 hours.
Spedra is the fastest acting erectile dysfunction treatment available. It works in just 15 minutes. Spedra is up to 80% effective at treating erectile dysfunction.
Viagra and other treatment options
There are many non-medical treatment options available for erectile dysfunction. Some men find that lifestyle changes can help them to get and maintain an erection such as:
- losing weight (especially if your BMI is high)
- stopping smoking
- exercising regularly
- trying to limit stress and anxiety
- eating a healthy, balanced diet
- limiting alcohol consumption to no more than 14 units per week
There are other medical treatments available too:
- Alprostadil - a synthetic version of the hormone prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) which is usually offered to men who have not responded to other erectile dysfunction medicines. It comes in several forms, such as an injection, cream, and small pellet. All are applied directly to the penis.
- Vacuum pumps help to promote blood flow to the penis, helping you to get and keep an erection. Most men find they are effective and are usually offered when erectile dysfunction medicines are not suitable or have not worked.
- Surgery may be available for severe cases. Implants into the penis can replace the body’s own ability to have an erection.
- If erectile dysfunction is being caused by an underlying health condition such as diabetes, it may be necessary to treat this first. Once the underlying condition is treated, you may find it easier to get an erection.
