How it Works
About Clenil Modulite
What is Clenil Modulite?
Clenil Modulite is a preventer inhaler that’s used regularly to prevent the onset of asthma symptoms. It’s also known as a brown inhaler and contains the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate which belongs to a group of medications called corticosteroids.
Preventer inhalers like Clenil Modulite are taken daily and can reduce how often and severe your asthma symptoms are.
How does Clenil Modulite work?
Clenil Modulite works by having an anti-inflammatory effect on the small air passages in the lungs, relaxing them and making it easier to breathe.
How long does Clenil Modulite take to work?
A Clenil Modulite inhaler does not work straight away, you’ll need to use it every day for it to work, even if you do not have any asthma symptoms. You should notice an improvement in your symptoms within just 3 to 7 days and are likely to use your reliever or blue inhaler less often.
How effective is Clenil Modulite?
Clenil Modulite inhaler is effective as a preventer inhaler with potent anti-inflammatory properties. Research shows that beclometasone dipropionate improves airflow and reduces the frequency of asthma symptoms and, as a result, the need to use a reliever inhaler.
How to use Clenil Modulite
Clenil Modulite is a pressurised metered dose inhaler (PMDI) which gives your medication in a spray or aerosol form.
How to use the Clenil Modulite inhaler:
- Remove the mouthpiece cover by holding it between your thumb and forefinger, squeeze gently and pull away from the inhaler body. Make sure there is no debris inside. If you haven't used the inhaler for a few days, expel 1 puff into the air to make sure it works.
- Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base underneath the mouthpiece, and breathe out as far as is comfortable.
- Place your mouth around the mouthpiece so that it is between your teeth, but do not bite it. Then close your lips around it.
- Begin to breathe in and as you do, press down on the top of the inhaler to release a puff of medication, then continue to breathe in steadily and deeply.
- Hold your breath and remove the inhaler. Continue to hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds or as long as is comfortable. Then, slowly breathe out.
- If you need another puff, keep your inhaler upright and leave it for about 30 seconds before repeating steps 2 to 5.
- When you have finished, replace the mouthpiece cover to keep it dust and debris-free. You should hear the cover snap into position.
- Rinse your mouth out with water after taking your inhaler, as this can minimise the risk of getting thrush in your mouth.
If you find your inhaler difficult to use with the steps above, your doctor can give you a ‘spacer’ to help deliver your medication more easily. It is important that you use your Clenil Modulite inhaler correctly. Your doctor will advise how and when you should use your inhaler and how many puffs you’ll need to take.
When you have finished, check the dose indicator on the back of your inhaler. You’ll need to order a replacement inhaler when the dose counter displays 20.
When to take Clenil Modulite
Most people use their inhaler in the morning and then again in the evening. Usually, you’ll need to use the Clenil Modulite twice a day. Your doctor will tell you how many puffs you’ll need to take.
How often to take Clenil Modulite
Clenil Modulite should be used daily to prevent asthma symptoms. It is available in 4 different strengths. Your doctor will tell you which dose is most suitable for you and how often you’ll need to use it.
Below is an example of the starting and maximum adult doses for each of the strengths available:
Starting dose | Maximum daily dose | |
---|---|---|
Clenil Modulite 50mcg | 200mcg (4 puffs) twice a day | 800mcg (16 puffs) |
Clenil Modulite 100mcg | 200mcg (2 puffs) twice a day | 800 mcg (8 puffs) |
Clenil Modulite 200mcg | 200mcg (1 puff) twice a day | 800mcg (4 puffs) |
Clenil Modulite 250mcg | 500mcg (2 puffs) twice a day | 2,000mcg (8 puffs) |
How long do you need to use Clenil Modulite for?
You will need to use your Clenil Modulite inhaler for as long as you are told to by your doctor. Or for as long as you need to prevent asthma symptoms occurring. This is usually long-term.
How long will Clenil Modulite last?
The Clenil Modulite inhaler contains 200 doses or puffs. So, if you are taking 4 puffs per day it will last 50 days. This number will reduce if the daily puffs are increased.

Clenil Modulite warnings
Do not use the Clenil Modulite inhaler:
- if you are allergic to any of the ingredients it contains
- to treat a sudden asthma attack or breathlessness – instead, use your reliever or blue inhaler
Before using a Clenil Modulite inhaler, tell your doctor if:
- you have ever been or are being treated for tuberculosis (TB)
- you need to avoid alcohol for any reason
- your asthma is getting worse
If you are transferring from steroid tablets to an inhaler, you may notice that you feel generally unwell, and develop a rash, eczema or a runny nose. If you do, do not stop treatment unless your doctor tells you to.
Let your doctor know if you are taking any other medications, including those that are prescribed, available over the counter, or are herbal. Some medicines can increase the effects of Clenil Modulite, such as some HIV medications (ritonavir and cobicistat) and your doctor may want to monitor you carefully.
Clenil Modulite in pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning on having a baby, trying to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before using the Clenil Modulite inhaler.
Clenil Modulite alternatives
At Superdrug Online Doctor, we offer a range of asthma treatments, including alternative preventer inhalers. They are:
The Pulmicort Turbohaler is another example of a preventer inhaler, but it contains the corticosteroid, budesonide. It works in a similar way to Clenil Modulite by reducing the inflammation and swelling in your lungs to prevent an asthma attack. Pulmicort Turbohaler is a dry powder inhaler (DPI) which releases the medication when you take a deep, fast breath in from the inhaler.
There are 3 types of Qvar inhalers available:
- Qvar Aerosol
- Qvar Autohaler
- Qvar Easi-breathe
They each contain the same active ingredient, beclometasone, the same active ingredient as Clenil Modulite, but the inhalers work in slightly different ways. You may find it easier to take a certain type of inhaler than another one.
We also offer combined inhalers which contain 2 types of medication: a steroid to reduce the inflammation and a long-acting bronchodilator to relax the muscles in your airways. These inhalers both prevent and relieve asthma symptoms. At Superdrug Online Doctor, we offer the following combined asthma inhalers:
