Setting your weight loss goals
The first thing to do to set realistic weight loss goals is to work out your BMI (body mass index). Ask your doctor, or use a BMI calculator to work this out. This will show you how much weight to lose before you reach a healthy weight.
BMI calculators use your age, height, and weight. Using these figures, a BMI calculator will show you which weight category you’re in (healthy or unhealthy). A healthy BMI is a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9.
With a target healthy weight in mind, set yourself small weight loss goals or mini goals and a target date for each of these.
Match these goals with specific deadlines and write them down on a chart. Alternatively, you can use an app on your phone to map your progress.
You’ll also need to think about what you’re doing to meet these weight loss goals along the way.
You stand the best chance of losing weight if you’re:
- exercising regularly
- and eating a healthy, balanced and low-fat diet
You should also reward yourself for meeting your weight loss goals with non-food rewards along the way.
