About Progesterone Testing
What is a progesterone test?
A progesterone blood test, sometimes called a mid-luteal progesterone test or a 21 day progesterone test, is a simple finger-prick blood test you can do at home. A progesterone test measures the amount of progesterone in your blood, which is a hormone that helps to prepare your body for pregnancy.
Why get a progesterone test?
A progesterone blood test can help assess if you’re ovulating normally and releasing healthy eggs, which is an indicator of fertility. Progesterone is produced by the developing egg, so high levels are a sign that your body has released an egg which is ready to fertilise with a sperm cell.
Who should get a progesterone test?
This test is for women who are 18 or older who have tried, or who are currently trying, to get pregnant. This test is often done by women who wonder if they are releasing eggs which can be fertilised, usually if there’s been a delay in getting pregnant.
When should I get a progesterone test?
You should take a blood sample in the mid-luteal phase of your menstrual cycle, when your progesterone levels are at their peak. The mid-luteal phase is about 7 days before your next expected period starts, so if you have a 28 day cycle, that would be day 21.
It’s really important you try to get the test done at the mid-luteal stage, otherwise the result may be inaccurate.
If you don’t have regular periods, you can still test your progesterone levels to see if you’re ovulating. However, you may need to repeat this test weekly to check to see if there are any fluctuations. Being on contraceptive pills can also affect the results so we’d recommend stopping these before doing the test in the next cycle.
What should I do about the results of my progesterone test?
When you get your results from our doctors, they’ll also give you some advice on what to do next.
If your levels of progesterone are lower than expected, then it may mean that you did not ovulate this cycle. If you have regular periods then it might be worth repeating the test during another cycle to confirm that this is an ongoing issue. You should speak to your GP to ask about any follow-up tests, or for a referral to a specialist fertility clinic.
If your levels of progesterone are at the expected level, then that is a reassuring sign that you have ovulated and that there is nothing that you need to do. If you are still having difficulties getting pregnant, and have been trying for over 6 months, then you may want to speak to your GP or a fertility specialist to see if there are other tests that need to be carried out.
