What is Microgynon?

Microgynon is a contraceptive pill prescribed to prevent unwanted pregnancy, and can also be used to help relieve the symptoms of period pain. It contains a combination of the two hormones ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel.

How do I take Microgynon?

Microgynon tablets are to be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing them. You can take your Microgynon tablet either with or without water or food.

Each packet of Microgynon tablets contains 21 pills, with each pill marked by the corresponding day of the week on the blister foil strip. If you start your packet on a Monday, you will press your first tablet through the blister foil marked ‘MON’, and carry on through the usual days of the week following the arrow. Please note, product packaging may differ from the image above.

If this is the first hormonal contraceptive you have used in the past month, you should take your first Microgynon pill on the first day of your menstrual cycle, i.e. on the first day of your usual menstrual bleed.

How does Microgynon help relieve period pain?

Microgynon can help relieve your period pain by making your periods lighter. Period cramps are usually caused by chemicals in the womb called prostaglandins, which make the womb contract and squeeze. If your body produces too much of this chemical, it can make these normal contractions more intense and sometimes painful. Fewer prostaglandins are released when you have lighter periods, which can make your menstrual cramps less painful.

Ingredients

Each Microgynon tablet contains 0.03mg ethinylestradiol and 0.15mg levonorgestrel, which are synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone.

Microgynon tablets are round, small and either come in white or yellow colour.

Who can take Microgynon?

Microgynon is a prescription only medication. While most healthy women can take Microgynon, it is important that a doctor or nurse assess whether it is suitable for you before you take it.

You must not take Microgynon if:

Are about to have an operation or will be off your feet for a long time

Have had a heart attack or stroke in the past

Have ever suffered from angina pectoris or a transient ischaemic attack

Suffer from diabetes with blood vessel damage

You have ever had a blood clot

Have a disorder which affects the way your blood clots

Have very high blood pressure

Suffer from hyperhomocysteinaemia

Have or have had a migraine with an aura

Have or have had breast cancer

Have or have had a severe liver disease

Have had a liver tumour

Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Microgynon

Make sure you inform your prescribing doctor of any conditions you have had in the past and mention any medications you are currently taking.

Side Effects

The following side-effects are common if you are taking Microgynon:

nausea
abdominal pain
headaches
depression
mood swings
painful or sore breasts

Uncommon side effects

fluid retention
upset stomach
migraine
loss of interest in sex
breast enlargement
skin rash, which may be itchy

Warnings

Microgynon slightly increases the risk of thrombosis. You should use an alternative type of contraception if you are already at risk, due to an illness or a previous medical conditions. This is the case if you:

have a family history of thrombosis
are obese
are over 35 and smoke
are suffering from a condition affecting your lipometabolism
are suffering from hypertension
have a heart problem such as atrial fibrillations or cardiac valve disease

Drug Interactions

There are a few medications which can interact with Microgynon. Make sure you let your prescribing doctor know if you are currently taking any medication.

Some medications used to treat epilepsy
Some medicines used to treat HIV and hepatitis
The antifungal medication griseofulvin
Certain sedatives, such as barbiturates
Certain antibiotics
The herbal remedy St. John’s Wort
