Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are both examples of oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) tablets, but they contain different active ingredients and are made by different manufacturers. Foundayo contains orforglipron and is made by Eli Lilly, and the Wegovy pill contains semaglutide and is produced by Novo Nordisk.

They are both effective for weight loss, although the Wegovy pill has been shown to produce greater results. Yet, Foundayo has a more flexible dosing regimen, which may be more suitable if you are unable to stick to the Wegovy pill fasting routine.

Here, we explore the key differences between Foundayo and the Wegovy pill to help you make the most appropriate choice for you.

What are the differences between Foundayo and the Wegovy Pill?

Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are both once-daily, prescription-only oral GLP-1 weight-loss pills, but there are some key differences between the two, including their active ingredients and how they’re taken.

Foundayo contains the active ingredient orforglipron, while the Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. Orforglipron and semaglutide are both absorbed by the body in different ways, this affects how they should be taken.

For example, although Foundayo and Wegovy pill are both taken once daily, the Wegovy pill has stricter dosing instructions. That’s because it requires a special protective chemical coating called SNAC to stop it from being broken down by your stomach acid before it reaches your bloodstream. This means the Wegovy pill must be taken:

  • first thing in the morning on an empty stomach – you need to have fasted for at least 8 hours before taking the Wegovy pill
  • with no more than 120ml of plain water
  • 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other oral medications

Foundayo, on the other hand, is a non-peptide small molecule, which means its smaller molecular structure does not require a special coating to ensure it is absorbed into the bloodstream. This makes it much more flexible than the Wegovy pill, as it can be taken at any time of day and with or without food.

Is Foundayo as effective as the Wegovy Pill?

No, the Wegovy pill is more effective because it produces greater average weight loss. In clinical trials, the average weight loss on the Wegovy pill’s highest maintenance dose of 25mg was 16.4% after 64 weeks. With Foundayo, the average weight loss after 72 weeks on the highest maintenance dose of 17.2mg was 12.4%.

Does Foundayo work as well as the Wegovy Pill for everyone?

No, Foundayo does not work as well as the Wegovy Pill for most people. However, the number of people achieving at least 5, 10, 15, or 20% average weight loss is similar for both weight loss pills, but a greater percentage of people are more likely to achieve 15 or 20% weight loss with the Wegovy pill.

People achieving body weight reduction of Wegovy pill* Foundayo**
5% or more 79.2% 77.1%
10% or more 63% 59.6%
15% or more 50% 39.6%
20% or more 29.7% 20.1%

* after 64 weeks  ** after 72 weeks

It is important to remember that how your body responds to weight loss medication depends on individual factors, including your response to the active ingredient, your lifestyle, age, and starting body weight.

Do Foundayo and the Wegovy Pill have different side effects?

Foundayo and the Wegovy pill share similar side effects because they belong to the same class of medications, GLP-1 receptor agonists. In clinical trials, Foundayo caused gastrointestinal side effects in 68.7% of people, while 74% reported gastrointestinal side effects with the Wegovy pill.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people) of Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are:

Side effect Wegovy pill Foundayo
Feeling sick 49% 35%
Being sick 21% 24%
Constipation 17% 24%
Diarrhoea 22% 25%
Stomach pain Not known 14%
Indigestion Not known 13%

The Wegovy pill also has the following very common side effects, which are different from Foundayo:

  • headache
  • feeling weak or tired

Does Foundayo cause fewer side effects than the Wegovy Pill?

No, Foundayo does not cause fewer side effects than the Wegovy pill. They both have similar side effect profiles and share most of the very common side effects, which are mainly gastrointestinal-related. There are some slight differences in how many people they affect. For example, 49% of people reported feeling sick on the Wegovy pill compared to 35% with Foundayo. However, this can also be related to the individual’s response to the medication, as not everyone will get side effects when taking weight loss medication.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects are uncommon with both Foundayo and the Wegovy Pill, but they can happen. As both medications act on GLP-1 receptors, there is some overlap in their serious effects, including pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and dehydration caused by persistent digestive side effects.

Foundayo vs the Wegovy Pill dosing schedule

Another key difference between the Wegovy pill and Foundayo is their dosing schedules. Although they are both taken once a day, they are available in different strengths and are taken in different ways.

For both medications, you will start treatment at a low dose and gradually increase it until you reach the maximum maintenance dose or the dose that is right for you. This is to help your body adjust to the active ingredient and minimise the chance of side effects.

Wegovy pill dosage schedule

The Wegovy pill is available in 4 doses and is taken once daily, usually first thing in the morning before eating, drinking, or taking any other oral medications. You must take the Wegovy pill at the same time each day to keep the medication at a consistent level in your body.

The Wegovy pill dosage schedule is as follows:

  • month 1 – 1.5mg once a day
  • month 2 – 4mg once a day
  • month 3 – 9mg once a day
  • month 4 – 25mg once a day

Foundayo pill dosing schedule

Foundayo is available in 6 doses and is less restrictive. It must be taken once a day, preferably at the same time each day, but it can be taken at any time with or without food.

The Foundayo dosing schedule is as follows:

  • Month 1 (starting dose) – 0.8mg
  • Month 2 – 2.5mg
  • Month 3 – 5.5mg
  • Month 4 – 9mg
  • Month 5 – 14.5mg
  • Month 6 (maximum dose) – 17.2mg

Is Foundayo cheaper than the Wegovy Pill?

It depends. Wegovy pill and Foundayo follow the same price pattern for the first two lowest doses. For example, starting doses Foundayo 0.8mg and Wegovy pill 1.5mg are both £99 at Superdrug Online Doctor. The step up dose for Foundayo (2.5mg) and Wegovy pill (4mg) also both cost £119. However, the next step up dose for Wegovy pill (9mg) is slightly more than the following step up dose for Foundayo (5.5mg) at Superdrug Online Doctor. If you are titrating up to the highest maintenance dose, Foundayo 17.2mg is £199 and Wegovy pill 25mg is £229. This makes the Wegovy pill more expensive over time.

However, depending on your personal needs and what your doctor recommends, not everybody titrates to the highest maintenance dose of Foundayo or Wegovy pill. So, although Foundayo works out cheaper than the Wegovy pill, depending on your treatment plan, costs can vary.

The current price of Foundayo pill from Superdrug Online Doctor is:

Dose Standard price
0.8mg £99
2.5mg £119
5.5mg £149
9mg £169
14.5mg £189

Can I switch from the Wegovy Pill to Foundayo?

Yes, it is possible to switch from the Wegovy pill to Foundayo, but only under a doctor's guidance. However, when switching, you may put some weight back on or plateau at a slightly higher weight than if you continue with the Wegovy pill or your current treatment.

The table below shows which Foundayo dose you may be able to switch to from your current Wegovy pill dose. However, this is only a guide, and your doctor will confirm the safest Foundayo starting dose for you.

Wegovy pill Foundayo (orforglipron)
1.5mg 0.8mg
4mg 2.5mg
9mg 5.5mg
25mg 9mg
- 14.5mg
- 17.2mg

You should discuss with your doctor why you want to switch because they may be able to offer advice to help you remain on your current treatment to help you get the best results.

Which is better – Foundayo or the Wegovy Pill?

Neither Foundayo nor the Wegovy Pill is necessarily better for everyone. The Wegovy Pill may be the better option if maximising potential weight loss is your priority, while Foundayo may suit you better if you want a more convenient daily tablet without having to plan doses around food and drink.

There have not yet been head-to-head trials directly comparing the two medications, so results from separate studies should be interpreted cautiously. However, clinical trials suggest that the Wegovy Pill may produce somewhat greater average weight loss than Foundayo at their respective studied doses.

Who might prefer the Wegovy Pill?

The Wegovy Pill may be worth considering if:

✓ Maximum effectiveness is important to you – separate clinical trials suggest the Wegovy Pill may lead to greater average weight loss than Foundayo, although individual results vary and the medicines have not been directly compared.

✓ You can manage its dosing routine – the Wegovy Pill needs to be taken on an empty stomach with a limited amount of water, followed by a waiting period before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines.

✓ You already have experience with semaglutide – for example, if you have previously used injectable Wegovy successfully and your prescriber considers the tablet suitable.

Who might prefer Foundayo?

Foundayo may be worth considering if:

✓ Convenience is particularly important – Foundayo can be taken once daily with or without food, making it easier to fit around breakfast, other oral medications and your usual routine.

✓ You find fasting difficult – unlike the Wegovy Pill, you do not need to take Foundayo on an empty stomach or wait before eating afterwards.

✓ A simpler routine could help you take your medication consistently – not having to plan meals and drinks around your dose may make Foundayo more practical for some people.

Ultimately, the choice may come down to potential effectiveness versus everyday convenience. Your medical history, other medications, previous weight loss treatments, side effects, and personal preferences also matter. Your prescriber can assess these factors and help you choose the most appropriate option.
