Like most medications, triptans and anti-nausea tablets can cause side effects in some patients. For a full list of all known side effects, read the patient leaflet supplied with your medication.
There are many different ways of treating migraines and you may need to try different medications or therapies before you find the treatment which works best for you. Most people who suffer from migraines use over-the-counter painkillers to manage their symptoms. If you find that non-prescription painkillers don’t help you, you may want to try taking a triptan such as Imigran nasal spray.

You can also try combination migraine tablets from your local pharmacy, which contain a painkiller and an anti-nausea medication.

There are alternative treatments available, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS for short. TMS involves a small device which delivery magnetic pulses to your skin. It has been found to reduce the severity of migraine symptoms in some patients but it doesn’t work for everyone. In order to benefit from TMS, you need to undergo treatment during the beginning stages of a migraine. There is currently only limited evidence that the magnetic pulses are an effective treatment for migraine and little is known about potential side effects of the treatment.

Many people who regularly experience migraines notice that there are certain triggers which bring about their migraines. Identifying these triggers will help you avoid symptoms. The triggers vary between patients and they may include certain foods, medications, emotional stress or excitement, tiredness or bright lights amongst many others.
