How it Works
Tadalafil (Generic Cialis)
What is tadalafil (generic Cialis)?
Tadalafil is a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction. It is a type of medication known as a PDE-5 inhibitor, and helps men to get an erection when they are unable to naturally. Tadalafil works in the same way as Cialis, but can be manufactured by any pharmaceutical company. This means that tadalafil is usually available at a lower price than Cialis. which is also used to treat erectile dysfunction.
How tadalafil works
Tadalafil works similarly to other erectile dysfunction medications, such as Viagra and Cialis. It works by relaxing the muscles and blood vessels in your penis, improving blood flow and making it easier to get and keep erections when you’re aroused. It is a type of medication known as a PDE-5 inhibitor, which blocks certain enzymes that can make it difficult to get an erection. Tadalafil, as well as other erectile dysfunction treatments, only help you get an erection when you are sexually aroused. It does not give you an erection on its own.
Does tadalafil make you last longer?
Yes, tadalafil can help you last longer if you are finding it difficult to keep an erection during sex. However, it has no effect on how long it takes you to orgasm, so tadalafil will not help if you are orgasming too quickly. If you are finishing too quickly, you may want to look into techniques on how to last longer in bed, or treatment for premature ejaculation.
How to take tadalafil
You should take one tablet of tadalafil at least 30 minutes to an hour before sex, to give the medication time to start working. If you have sex more than twice a week, you may want to try a lower daily dosage of tadalafil (2.5mg or 5mg). With the lower dosages, you take it at the same time every day so the effects are always working, and you don’t need to take it just before having sex. This is useful for men who have sex often, or who enjoy spontaneous sex without having to remember to take a pill before having sex.
When taking tadalafil, swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
For the best results, avoid eating a heavy meal or fatty foods before taking tadalafil. These foods can slow down how quickly your body absorbs the medication, which can make it take longer to start working. Alcohol can also make tadalafil less effective, and can increase the likelihood of side effects.
How long does tadalafil last?
The effects of tadalafil lasts for up to 36 hours after you take it, which is why it is sometimes called the “Weekend Pill”. This means that tadalafil will help you to get an erection when you’re sexually aroused during this time frame, and not that you’ll have an erection that lasts for 36 hours.
Daily doses of tadalafil are designed so the medication is always working, so you’ll be able to get an erection when you need one.

Dosages of tadalafil
There are 4 dosages of tadalafil. 2 daily doses and 2 doses taken before sex. Daily doses can be a better choice if you have sex on more than 3 different days a week.
Make sure to check with a doctor before switching the dose of any medication.
Tadalafil 2.5mg:
- The lowest dosage of tadalafil
- You can try this dose if you’ve tried 5mg and it worked well but it gives you some mild side effects
- This dose is slightly less effective that 5mg, but it also has a lower chance of side effects
Tadalafil 5mg:
- The standard daily dose
- This is the recommended dose if you’ve not tried a daily dosage of tadalafil before
Tadalafil 10mg:
- The standard before sex dose
- This is the recommended dose if you’ve not tried tadalafil before
Tadalafil 20mg:
- The higher-strength before sex dose
- You could try this dose if 10mg does not work for you and you don’t get any serious side effects
- This dose is slightly more likely to work than 10mg, but has a higher risk of side effects.
Tadalafil vs Cialis
If you’re not sure which to choose, remember they both have the same active ingredient and both are safe as long as a doctor approves treatment for you. We don’t recommend one over the other.

Tadalafil vs sildenafil
If you need help choosing:
- Both are about as effective as each other – even though sildenafil has higher dosage numbers, that doesn’t mean it’s stronger overall
- If you want a longer-lasting medication, you might want to choose tadalafil or tadalafil daily
- If you don’t want to have to plan to take your medication before sex, you might want to choose tadalafil daily
Since sildenafil and tadalafil are the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, you can see our Viagra vs Cialis vs Levitra page for more information.
