Will Yasmin affect other things like my periods/PMS?
How can Yasmin affect periods? – Yasmin can make period lighter but also can lead to irregular periods. In clinical trials where Yasmin has been compared to other combined pills, it has been shown to have a similar effect on periods as other popular brands. Combined pills have been shown to reduce menstrual loss (bleeding heaviness) by around 60%. Unscheduled bleeding is common with all pills in the first two cycles; occurring in around 9-14% of users.
How can Yasmin affect premenstrual syndrome (PMS)? – it can improve PMS symptoms for some women. In one study for example, showed significant improvement over 6 months in these symptoms in women taking Yasmin. This is thought to be because, just like natural progesterone, drospirenone is slightly sedating.
Will Yasmin affect my weight? – in preclinical studies there were small reductions in weight in Yasmin users at the outset, but after follow up over a 2 year period, any small weight amounts of weight lost had been regained. Yasmin must not be viewed as a product to help weight loss. However, there is no evidence linking the contraceptive pill and weight gain.
Does Yasmin effects the symptoms of PCOS? – yes. Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) often suffer with irregular bleeding, acne, unwanted hair and weight gain. They are often recommended to take the combined pill as this stabilises fluctuating estrogen levels and controls their bleeding patterns.
