Malaria Tablets

Protect yourself on a trip abroad with affordable anti-malarial tablets

Malaria tablets (also known as antimalarials) help stop you from getting malaria when you go on holiday or live in areas where there is a risk.

Knowing which one is right for you and how to take it will help you to stay healthy and protected when traveling abroad to areas where there’s a high malaria risk.

At Superdrug Online Doctor, we offer a range of high quality malaria treatments for travelling abroad, with free to-your-door delivery options and ongoing doctor advice.

Malaria Country Information

Malaria guidelines are regularly updated and countries receive new risk ratings for malaria. As a result, some of the malaria risk advice on our site may be out of date. Before starting your assessment for malaria treatment, please check NaTHNaC guidance on the malaria risk in the country you’re travelling to. Neither the content on our website, nor our online assessment for malaria treatment are intended as a substitute for a full travel consultation. It is important you discuss all precautions recommended for your trip, for example you may need vaccines too – you can book a consultation here.

To place an order, fill in a brief questionnaire. One of our doctors will review your order and prescribe a treatment if suitable. Existing patients should login first.

Which side effects do different malaria tablets cause?

Each of the anti-malaria tablets has different side effects. See the detailed information on each tablet below to compare side effects.

Side effects at a glance:

Malarone

Malarone is considered the least likely to cause serious side effects – most commonly it can cause headache and stomach upset, like nausea/vomiting and/or diarrhoea

Malarone can also cause:

  • dizziness
  • coughing
  • unusual dreams
  • mood changes, like depression

Doxycycline

  • nausea
  • digestive problems such as diarrhoea
  • heartburn, especially if taken on an empty stomach or before lying down
  • increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • candidiasis, for example vaginal thrush

For a full list of side effects that each of these medications can cause, read the patient information leaflet.

The best preventative measure that you can take to avoid contracting malaria is to avoid being bitten in the first place.

Cover your skin by wearing long clothes, particularly in the evening and at night. Use an anti-malaria spray containing DEET to ward off mosquitoes and other insects. You should also consider using mosquito nets if you are sleeping in a malaria area.

There is no vaccine for malaria, so it is important to take steps to prevent contracting the infection.

If you would like personalised advice on malaria prevention, you can also book a £20 telephone consultation with one of our doctors.
