Dyspareunia is the medical term for pain felt during or after sex. Painful sexual intercourse occurs for a number of reasons and lots of women, and some men, will experience it at some point.

Dyspareunia is pain in the genitals or deeper in the pelvis that happens before, during or after sexual intercourse. It can be caused by physical or psychological problems. Treatments can help address the underlying cause or at least reduce the problem.

If you feel pain during sexual intercourse or after you’ve had sex, talk to your doctor or visit your local genitourinary (GUM) clinic for help and advice. You don’t need to feel self-conscious or embarrassed about talking about dyspareunia, as it’s a common problem that doctors and specialist GUM nurses are used to dealing with.
