What treatments are there?
Treatment varies depending on the cause of your dyspareunia. If you are experiencing pain, itchiness, or unusual discharge from the vagina, you may have thrush or you might need to have an STI test.
If vaginal dryness is determined as the cause, a lubricating product may be recommended to you.
If you are allergic to anything that you use around or in your genitals, for instance certain soaps or shampoos, or contraceptive products such as latex condoms or spermicides, you will probably be advised to stop using whatever is causing the irritation that makes sex painful.
On the other hand, if your doctor or GUM nurse thinks that the cause of your dyspareunia could be emotional, they may recommend a referral to a sex therapist or counsellor.
